Private School in Minnesota Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for 1st-12th Grade Students

Plymouth and Mendota Heights, MN – Brightmont Academy’s Plymouth and Mendota Heights campuses are excited to announce their involvement in the Students Voting Statewide Mock Election, an educational initiative organized by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office in collaboration with the YMCA Center for Youth Voice. This statewide mock election, one of the nation’s largest, saw participation from over 100,000 students across 489 schools during the 2022 election year. Programs like this are integral to ensuring students develop into informed, engaged citizens, particularly in a state like Minnesota, which had the third-highest youth voter turnout rate in the 2022 midterms.

Many students enter their government classes with a general awareness of elections but lack an understanding of key components such as the roles of elected officials, constitutional issues, and district representation. Through the mock election, Brightmont students gain insight into these areas, learning about both national and state elections in a practical and engaging manner. The mock election experience not only covers voter registration and candidate research but also encourages students to analyze the issues affecting their communities and the country. Elise Roberts, a government teacher at Brightmont Plymouth, shared her enthusiasm for the initiative: “The mock election is a great opportunity for Brightmont's students who are taking the U.S. Government or middle school civics courses to apply the information they learn in the textbook to real-life situations.”

Brightmont’s involvement in the Students Voting Statewide Mock Election has been met with excitement from both students and faculty. According to Roberts, the anticipation leading up to the event was palpable: “Students were highly energized! I prepared a countdown to election day and several students made it a daily practice to stop by my classroom and ask how soon they could vote. All of our teachers were enthusiastic and supportive in sharing their class time to help students participate in the election.”

As the 2024 elections approach, Brightmont Academy remains committed to helping students develop a strong understanding of civic responsibility and the importance of being informed and active participants in democracy.

Brightmont Academy is located at 720 Main Street, Suite 101 in Mendota Heights, and 2855 Glacier Lane N, Suite 200 in Plymouth, and is currently accepting enrollments. Families and professionals are invited to attend an Open House event on Thursday, November 21st, 2024, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
