Private School Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for Grades 1-12

National — Slow lesson pacing and repeating mastered concepts contribute to student disengagement. At Brightmont Academy, an accredited private school providing fully individualized instruction for grades 1–12, mastery-based learning allows students to advance once they have demonstrated understanding, creating a more personalized educational experience.

Instead of following a fixed classroom pace, students move forward based on their own individual level of comprehension and readiness. “Brightmont was built around the idea that students should advance once they have truly mastered a concept,” said Karen Buckner, CEO of Brightmont. “In our model, students demonstrate their understanding through assessments, and once they show proficiency, they can continue progressing through the curriculum.”

In many traditional school settings, teachers are responsible for supporting students with varying learning styles and academic needs. As a result, lessons may need to be revisited several times across the classroom. “Teachers are balancing the needs of many different learners at the same time,” Buckner said. “That often means concepts are revisited multiple times, even for students who understood the material from the beginning. Over time, that can affect engagement and motivation for some students.”

By allowing students to continue advancing after demonstrating understanding, mastery-based learning helps ensure students are consistently challenged at the appropriate level. “One of the things we hear most often from students is that they appreciate being able to move at their own pace,” Buckner said. “Meeting students where they are means supporting those who need additional help while also allowing students who grasp concepts quickly to continue advancing.”

Brightmont Academy has campuses across ten states and is currently accepting enrollments.
