Brightmont Academy Supports Sleep-Deprived Students with Flexible Start Times

Private School Specializing in One-to-One Instruction for Grades 1-12

National — With more than 70% of U.S. high school students struggling with sleep deprivation, schools and families are increasingly acknowledging the academic consequences. Research continues to link sleep deprivation to lower focus, reduced memory retention, and decreased classroom engagement, factors that can quickly translate into lower grades and increased stress for teens. Brightmont Academy, an accredited private school offering fully individualized, one-to-one instruction for students in grades 1–12, gives students the flexibility to build a school day that matches their learning needs, including the option to start later in the morning.

Brightmont’s customizable scheduling allows students to complete coursework at a time when they are most alert and prepared to succeed. “There is growing awareness among schools nationwide about the need to reevaluate start times,” said Karen Buckner, CEO of Brightmont. “Extensive research shows that high school students are not getting adequate sleep, yet they are often the ones expected to begin their school day the earliest.”

Buckner added that traditional early start times often work against students, especially teens whose sleep cycles naturally shift later. “Many parents can attest that early morning schedules are challenging for teenagers, whose natural sleep cycles shift later,” Buckner said. “Rather than working against that biological reality, Brightmont’s flexible model allows students to begin their day at a time when they are more alert, focused, and ready to learn.”

Rather than requiring students to be academically “on” at the earliest hours of the morning, Brightmont empowers students to start later, sometimes as late as mid-morning, when they are more prepared to engage with challenging subjects. “If a student’s first class of the day requires critical thinking, their ability to fully engage matters,” Buckner added. “When students are expected to perform at a high level before they are mentally prepared, it can be reflected in their work. By offering adjustable start times, we provide students the opportunity to approach challenging subjects when they are best equipped to succeed.”

Brightmont Academy is located in ten states and is currently accepting enrollments. Find your nearest campus and schedule a tour.
